David McAleavey
Public Health Spatial Planning Practitioner
David McAleavey is a public health spatial planning practitioner working at the intersection of the built environment and public health, with a background in participatory design and co-production. Over more than two decades he has worked with grassroots communities, public-sector bodies and third-sector organisations on socioeconomic inequality. Through the Public Practice programme in 2023 he worked across South Tees — with Middlesbrough Council and Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council — as a “Creating Active and Healthy Places” lead. His ongoing research examines how inequalities become embedded in the places where people live, travel, work and take part in recreation, with the aim of promoting healthy and sustainable environments. He has engaged regionally, nationally and internationally, including with the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities and the Health & Wellbeing in Planning Network.
